Significance and Beliefs
The Gates of Heaven: On this day, the Vaikuntha Dwaram (the "Gate to Vaikuntha" or heaven) opens. This special gateway encircles the innermost sanctum of Lord Vishnu in major temples.
Moksha: Devotees believe that passing through this specific doorway on this auspicious day grants liberation from the cycle of birth and death and leads to salvation (moksha).
Legend: According to the Padma Purana, Lord Vishnu manifested a divine feminine energy named Ekadashi to defeat the demon Murasura. Pleased with her victory, Vishnu blessed her that anyone observing a fast on this day would attain His supreme abode.
Ekadashi fasting days occur twice every lunar month on the 11th tithi (lunar day), amounting to 24 sacred days dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
